We’re launching the much-anticipated trends of Spring/Summer 2015 – Tropicana, Sports Luxe, Afternoon Tea and Nautical – with style tips on how to wow this season.
With winter well and truly over, it’s time to get updated with the latest styles for Spring/Summer 2015! We promise there’s something for everyone this season, with the trend forecast split into 4 major themes: Tropicana, Sports Luxe, Afternoon Tea and Nautical. Taking inspiration from the major fashion capitals of the world (New York, Paris and London), and with the latest offerings from top international brands available in store, we show you how to pull off these trends with ease!
Set as the biggest theme of the season, Tropicana is all about the bright and cheerful tropical prints so favoured at the beach, but made appropriate for the urban city life. The key to wearing bold colours or patterns is to keep your silhouette streamlined with tailored pieces. Some designers have tweaked the trend slightly by using darker colours to subdue loud prints – the Elizabeth and James (price unavailable) top and skirt co-ordinate is a good example of a modern, grown up take on the trend. If prints are not your cup of tea, you can still stay on-trend by colour-blocking. Tailored separates will make your look more intentional than sloppy, and this translates to an office-appropriate outfit. The youthful energy of Tropicana extends into accessories and shoes, and this is the time to have your bag and footwear stand out as much as your outfit – they shouldn’t take the backseat! Go ahead and mix your print dress with a bright bag, like this orange one from Kartell ($350).
2. Sports Luxe
This trend is far from the mesh singlets of yesteryear – think typical sports garb like track pants, hoodies and t-shirts remade with materials such as leather, silk jersey and premium cotton (hence the ‘luxe’ in Sports Luxe).
You could go completely athletic with sporty separates, or give your feminine side an edge by layering blouses with satin-shine bomber jackets, or grounding skirts and dresses with chunky platform sandals.
To retain that element of fashion and fun, inject some colour into your look with bold accessories. This tote bag byHanaa Fu ($269) fits the bill and is suitably sporty with its zips and geometric detailing. And if your skin has seen better days, fake the post-exercise glow with some blush and light cover-up. Try the Make Up Store Ultra Light Foundation ($45) for coverage that lets your skin breathe.
The monsoon season is over and that means private yacht parties and cruises can resume! Okay, while not many of us are lucky enough to have frequent weekend cruise getaways or party on boats, it doesn’t hurt to get into the spirit of things and dress for the occasion.
You know the drill – lots of blue, white and stripes, like this sleeveless dress from Samsoe & Samsoe (price unavailable). Colour schemes make or break the outfit for this trend, so sticking to two colours from head to toe, down to your choice of footwear, will give you a uniformed look. Rayban wayfarers and straw hats are de rigueur; as are boat shoes, but you can get away with smart-looking sandals like these ones from Jill Sander Navy (price unavailable).
If a monochrome look is too boring for you, a bright accent colour like red can help to visually break up your outfit and keep things interesting. Last but not least, don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen!
4. Afternoon Tea
For Afternoon Tea, take inspiration from relaxing in the lush greenery of a private garden, spending a tranquil afternoon curled up with your favourite book. You could take the traditional route of floral tea dresses for your high tea appointment, or experiment with a more modern and romantic approach of patterns and prints in soft pastel, mimicking the fresh blooms in a rose garden.
Whatever you choose, the end result should be one that is decidedly lady-like, mature and fluid. Complement your look with a natural flush to your cheeks and lips with a multipurpose colour like NARS Illuminator in Orgasm (price unavailable).
To accessorise, go for those with a tactile feel; this ultra-coveted bucket bag from Elizabeth and James ($755) and studded wedge sandals from Schutz ($199) made from enduring canvas and are neutral in tone, making it a breeze to match with different outfits.
